Montréal Casino & Hotel

Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada

Montréal Casino & Hotel stands on Île Notre-Dame in the Saint Lawrence, on the site of the world exhibition once held there. The complex uses pavilions built for that exhibition, and a hotel is attached to it. This entry covers the buildings, the restaurants, the halls and the grounds of the island; the gaming floor is not described here and is not part of what this guide sets out to cover.

What it is

The main structure is the former French pavilion of that exhibition, a tall building with a stepped outline, joined to the neighbouring Québec pavilion. Around it the island carries parkland, water channels and the routes left from the exhibition and later events. Restaurants and halls used for performances sit inside the complex. The bridge and metro line link the island back to the city centre across the river.

Good to know

The island is separate from the city grid, so the route in matters more than the distance. Parts of the complex keep their own hours, and events in the halls change what is open. Parkland around the buildings is public and seasonal. Age rules apply to parts of the site and are set by the province rather than by this guide.

Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Fallsview Casino Resort sits in the slope above the Niagara gorge, on the Canadian side of the falls. The complex is built into the hillside, so its entrances arrive at different levels of the same structure. The resort holds a hotel, a theatre, a spa, shops and restaurants; the gaming floor is left aside here, since this guide describes buildings, halls and grounds rather than gaming.

What it is

The building steps down the slope with the tower above and the public levels cut into the hill below it. Inside there is a theatre used for concerts and shows, a spa, a run of restaurants and a shopping galleria. The gorge lies immediately below, with the falls and the parkland along the river a short walk away. Streets above the site hold the tourist district of Niagara Falls.

Good to know

Levels inside the complex do not match street levels outside, so signage and lifts are worth following on a first visit. Theatre programmes set how busy the public parts are on a given evening. Parkland along the gorge is managed separately from the resort. Provincial age rules apply to parts of the site.

River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

River Rock Casino Resort stands in Richmond, British Columbia, beside the middle arm of the Fraser River and close to the airport. The complex brings together a hotel, a concert hall, a spa, restaurants and a marina on one riverside site. As elsewhere in this section, the gaming floor is not described; the entry keeps to the buildings, the halls and the ground around them.

What it is

The buildings sit low along the riverbank, with the hotel tower rising at one end and a large hall for concerts beside it. A marina and moorage lie on the water side, and a walkway runs along the river past the site. Restaurants and a spa are placed inside the complex. Richmond spreads flat around it, with the rail line to central Vancouver and the airport both nearby.

Good to know

The site is served by rapid transit as well as by road, which matters on event nights. What is open depends on the concert programme, and the halls are not in use every day. The riverside walkway is a public route rather than part of the resort. Provincial age rules apply to parts of the complex.

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario, Canada

Casino Rama Resort stands at Rama in Ontario, north of Orillia, on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation. The resort holds a hotel, a concert hall, a golf course and a spa on a single site away from any city centre. The gaming floor is not described in this guide, which keeps to buildings, halls and grounds as it does across this section.

What it is

The complex is spread low across its site, with the hotel joined to an entertainment hall used for concerts. A golf course and a spa belong to the resort, and parking spreads around the buildings. The setting is rural, close to Lake Couchiching, with wooded land and small roads around it. Orillia lies to the south, and the site is reached mainly by road from the highway.

Good to know

The resort sits well outside a city, so the drive and the return journey are worth planning. Concert dates set how busy the site is, and quieter days are common between them. Golf and outdoor parts of the resort are seasonal. Provincial age rules apply to parts of the complex.
