Ice Hotels

Four winter sites on the coast of northern Norway, on islands and along fjords. What stands on each site, and what is open on it, changes from season to season, so the entries keep to the buildings and the ground rather than to conditions. Two of the four are reached by boat rather than by road.

The Arctic Hideaway

Fleinvær, Nordland, Norway

The Arctic Hideaway stands on the small island of Sørvær in the Fleinvær group, off the Nordland coast. Instead of one building, the site is made up of several small huts placed apart from each other on the rock, each given a single purpose. Guests sleep in one hut and gather, cook or wash in another, so moving outdoors is part of an ordinary day here.

What it is

The huts are timber, low and simple, and they sit on the bare island rather than in a garden. Sleeping huts are separate from the kitchen and dining hut and from the washing and sauna building. There is no road to the island, and the crossing is made by boat from the mainland. The landscape is open sea, rock and low grass, with the mountains standing behind on the coast.

Good to know

Crossings depend on weather and on the operator's schedule, so travel days should be kept loose in winter. The site is often taken as a whole for a group, and open dates for single stays are limited. Warm outdoor clothing matters because the parts of the site are only linked by paths across open rock.

Lyngen Lodge

Lyngen, Troms, Norway

Lyngen Lodge is a timber lodge on the shore of the Lyngen fjord in Troms, with the Lyngen Alps standing across the water. It works as one house rather than as a set of cabins, and it is run for winter guests who spend their days outdoors. Rooms sit under the same roof as the sitting room, the dining room and the sauna, which keeps the plan compact.

What it is

The lodge is built low along the shoreline in timber, with windows turned towards the fjord and the mountains beyond it. Inside there is a common sitting room with a fire, a dining room where meals are taken together, and a sauna and hot tub on the water side. Outside the door the ground rises quickly, and the road along the fjord is the only land link to the site.

Good to know

The lodge runs to a season, and what is offered in winter differs from the summer months. Stays are often arranged as full packages with guiding rather than as a room on its own, so read what a date includes. Daylight is short in midwinter, and the road along the fjord can be affected by weather.

Manshausen Island Resort

Steigen, Nordland, Norway

Manshausen sits on a private island in the Steigen archipelago, north of Bodø on the Nordland coast. The site is built around an older farmstead and quay, with cabins added on the stone walls that run along the water. Each cabin stands on its own, glazed towards the sea, while the older buildings on the island hold the shared rooms where guests eat and gather.

What it is

The cabins are timber and glass, raised on the historic quay walls so that they hang over the water on one side. The main house on the island holds the dining room and common space, and there is a sauna by the shore. The island is reached by boat, and the ground around the buildings is rock, heather and sea. Mountains of the mainland close the view to the east.

Good to know

Access is by boat and depends on conditions, so allow room in a travel plan for a changed crossing. Meals are usually arranged at the house because there is nothing else on the island. Cabin numbers and what is open vary by season, and outdoor clothing is needed for moving between the cabins and the main house.

Malangen Resort

Malangen, Troms, Norway

Malangen Resort lies on the Malangen fjord south of Tromsø, on a shoreline site that mixes a main building with separate cabins. It is run as a year-round base rather than as a single winter structure, and the site spreads along the water instead of standing in one block. Guests may be housed in the main building or in a cabin, depending on the season and the booking.

What it is

The main house holds reception, a restaurant and common rooms, while the cabins stand along the shore and in the trees behind it. There is a sauna and a bathing area on the water side, and the ground between the buildings is left as it is. The fjord opens to the west, forest rises behind the site, and the road to Tromsø runs along the shore.

Good to know

Accommodation is split between the main house and the cabins, so confirm which one a booking covers. Winter activities on the site are seasonal and depend on ice, snow and daylight. The site is some distance from Tromsø by road, and transfers are arranged rather than assumed.
